Aromatherapy massage assists the absorption of essential oils into the epidermis (skin) and soft tissue below the surface where minute chemical components or molecules from the essential oils are absorbed, temporarily stored, and then transported via the circulatory system throughout the body. Most of the essential oil molecules, however, will evaporate from the skins warm surface tissue during massage.
The action of massage warms and stimulates surface and deep tissue, improves circulation, relieves muscle tension, and encourages the release of endorphins (‘feel good’ hormones). The gentle approach of aroma-massage supports relaxation and aids a sense of comfort and safety, encourages the body’s self-healing and natural regulating mechanisms to engage, and, especially when combined with the use of essential oils, supports immunity and a sense of wellbeing.
